The FSSC Foundation has released FSSC 22000 Version 7, the latest version of the GFSI-recognised food safety certification scheme, on 1 May 2026. ISO 22000:2018 remains the management system foundation, but Version 7 brings important updates to prerequisite programmes, food chain categories and the FSSC Additional Requirements. Certified organisations will need to upgrade during their audits from May 2027.
What Has Changed?
1. New ISO 22002-x:2025 prerequisite programme standards
The ISO/TS 22002 technical specifications are replaced by the new ISO 22002-x:2025 series, with a common part covering cross-sector PRPs and sector-specific parts on top. Clause numbers have changed, so PRP documents, checklists and cross-reference tables need to be remapped. For most manufacturers this is the biggest practical change.
2. Alignment with GFSI Benchmarking Requirements 2024
The scheme has been aligned with the latest GFSI benchmarking requirements, maintaining global recognition of FSSC 22000 certificates.
3. Strengthened FSSC Additional Requirements
- Food defence and food fraud — threat and vulnerability assessments must meet both the PRP standard and the Additional Requirements, with defined competence for the people preparing them
- Allergen management and environmental monitoring — stronger requirements and periodic review
- Food loss and waste objectives and food safety and quality culture progress
- Laboratory testing and quality control requirements
- Management review and internal audit — inputs and scope extended to cover the full Version 7 requirement set
4. Clearer food chain categories
Food chain categories and sub-categories are more clearly defined. Your certification scope and category must be recorded correctly with your certification body, as it affects auditor competence and audit planning.
5. Sustainability and certification rules
Version 7 strengthens requirements that support the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and updates certification rules including audit duration, multi-site certification and the use of remote (ICT) audit techniques.
